To the editor -
One reason mass transportation works in New York and Washington
is the density of population. There are enough people within
the boundaries of each rail system to be feasible and routes
are designed to connect enough destinations to be convenient
for users. South Florida does not have the
critical mass necessary to reach a point of efficiency or
the compact commercial development creating sufficient density
to warrant the needed investment to fund links to enough destinations.
Regional
real estate - which is what transportation really is about
- is not a romantic subject. It is a professional subject,
reflecting the evolution of markets, and needs trained evaluators
in decision-making.
What
is needed, but woefully absent, are patrol cars on our roads
to stop drivers who do all the dangerous and illegal things
described. If we had police doing what they are paid to do,
we would not have so many problems of lousy driving - which
is notable when one reaches this county, but is not obvious
elsewhere in the state.
